ELi PROCESSTM – THE EVOLUTION OF LITHIUM
WHAT
Reed Advanced Materials Pty Ltd (“RAM”), an incorporated joint venture between Neometals (70%) and Mineral Resources Ltd (30%), is commercialising a proprietary process to sustainably produce lithium hydroxide and carbonate from lithium chloride brine and/or hard rock feedstocks solutions using electrolysis (the ELi ProcessTM).
WHY
- Lithium is essential for lithium-ion batteries (LiB) because it is the primary non-substitutable element responsible for transporting the electric charge within the battery.
- Despite its critical role in enabling the energy transition, lithium production is the most carbon intensive stage in the LiB manufacturing process.
- Traditional methods of producing lithium hydroxide involve multiple chemical reactions and require intensive application of reagents which result in significant carbon emissions. These processes can also hinder both the profitability and sustainability of battery supply chains. The ELi Process™ was conceived to transform this paradigm.
- Studies indicate the ELi Process™ can provide a sustainable OPEX and CAPEX advantage over traditional methods, while reducing carbon emissions and helping to accelerate the global adoption of cleaner batteries.
